The entrance to “Battlegrounds” recreates the authentic Greensboro railway station's “Colored Only” access to this architecturally impressive, yet segregated facility. This installation propels the visitor into a maze that will give an emotional and palpable experience leading to a greater understanding and respect for the circumstances that forced an end to a regrettable era of suppression. The installation also celebrates the nation's first African-American labor union–the Pullman Car Porters.
