The system that emerged in southern society to enforce the separation of the races was formally known as "segregation," but was informally called "Jim Crow." The principle of a Jim Crow society was “separate but equal.”  However, the reality was “separate and very UNEQUAL.”

In every aspect of life - education, voting, jobs, travel, housing, and recreation – cities and even states enforced laws that severely restricted the rights of African Americans. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum’s permanent exhibit is titled “Battlegrounds”, and will combine graphic three-dimensional environments with priceless artifacts and evocative text to relate the degradation and humiliation that African Americans experienced in this dark period in our nation’s history.
