C. L. Harris
Unlike Ralph Johns, Harris was one retailer who wanted no part of publicity. As the Woolworth Store Manager, his response to the initial arrival of the “Greensboro Four” at his “whites-only” lunch counter was to just let them sit. Given the growing racial tensions throughout the South, Harris had suspected that something like this might happen and had consulted his regional office in Atlanta regarding an official company policy. The stated position of the company was to allow local law and practice to apply. He therefore had informed his superiors that he proposed to take no action, assuming that the demonstrators would soon become bored and leave. The company agreed, in part because they did not want the negative publicity that had accompanied police involvement in other protests.
