A wooden floor treatment distinguishes the Church and the Movement display from the rest of the “Battleground” exhibit space. A circular arrangement of discrete elements, suggests a "sanctuary", in counterpoint to images of bombing and intimidation, seen in the background. Guests will walk through an open structure created by stained glass windows and display pylons that will feature a shard from the infamous bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

The black church represented a rare experience of full ownership and control, often denied African-Americans under Jim Crow, and was the catalyst in the forging of an ecumenical coalition to support the movement’s non-violent social action agenda. It also became a focal point for organizational meeting and staging areas for marches and protest activity.
