A wooden floor treatment distinguishes
the Church and the Movement display from the rest of the “Battleground” exhibit
space. A circular arrangement of discrete elements, suggests
a "sanctuary", in counterpoint to images of bombing
and intimidation, seen in the background. Guests will walk through
an open structure created by stained glass windows and display
pylons that will feature a shard from the infamous bombing of
the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
The black church represented a rare experience of full ownership
and control, often denied African-Americans under Jim Crow,
and was the catalyst in the forging of an ecumenical coalition
to support the movement’s non-violent social action agenda.
It also became a focal point for organizational meeting and
staging areas for marches and protest activity.
