What a gift
the nation will have when the old F. W. Woolworth building comes to life as an important symbol in the struggle for civil rights. The museum will be a facility and program that will bring attention to Greensboro; that will augment the community as a destination for vacationing and learning; and, will develop into a center of study and programming that will include the colleges and universities of the area.

Establishing a museum and creating the accompanying programs is a major undertaking. There are two phases to this effort. Phase I focuses on opening the museum and Phase II completes the program and archival facilities.

Total Construction & Exhibit Phase $18,891,290

Phase III: Parallel Programming and Operational Fund Drive

In addition to the direct costs of design and construction that the capital campaign is addressing, a parallel programming and operational fund drive is commencing as a part of the ICRCM annual fund campaign. Special events, and targeted corporate and foundation support are being pursued.

Construction & Exhibit Project Overview & Status

During the past several years, significant progress been made. During the period from 1994 to 2004, the focus was on purchasing the Woolworth building, developing a structure to manage and oversee the museum and its programs, and developing community awareness. Over time, sufficient funds were secured to purchase the building, complete design elements and begin necessary interior demolition. Activity escalated with increased support from the North Carolina General Assembly, Guilford County Commission as well as the foundation, business communities and other major donors.

The Capital Campaign

The completed architectural plans and exhibit designs create an interior that will offer a museum that can be accredited by the American Association of Museums. Overall progress on Phase I may be seen in the adjacent chart. Design work for Phase II, the archival facilities and the programming floor, which will also house the administrative offices, is now underway.

Overall progress on Phase I may be seen in the adjacent chart. Design work for Phase II, the archival facilities and the programming floor, which will also house the administrative offices, is now underway.

What remains is to secure the necessary funds to finish the job. Thus, we present the Campaign to Complete the Dream to achieve Phase I and II.  Additionally we will be working to assure the long-term success of the Center and Museum through a parallel endowment fundraising effort. We invite you to partner with us in this historic endeavor.
